At Newborough East, Mathematics is a significant focus in our classrooms and in teacher professional development.
The school was chosen as one of the first schools to participate in the Victorian Government’s $24.3 million five-year program of the first 100 specialists in Maths & Science Education. There were 60 Maths specialists & 40 Science specialists chosen across the state. Specialists across the school commenced at the beginning of 2012.
Each of the specialists worked in their own classroom for half the week and spent the other half of the week supporting their unit team. This support was provided in a range of ways including time spent in classrooms, finding resources, collating data and organizing professional development.
A strong focus on Mathematics has continued at Newborough East.
Classroom teachers meet in Maths focused Professional Learning Teams each week. In these teams, teachers focus on analysing data and supporting one another to improve teaching practice and content knowledge in Mathematics.
